Week 13- Towards an uncertain future

I still cannot believe that we are already done with the semester. I have managed to learn so much about Latin America which makes me realise how most developing countries need for incongruence and stability changes. For this blog post I will try and touch on a few of the videos and lectures I had read:

This week’s lectures were based on the post effects of the dirty wars which happened in 1970. Most of Latin America if not all had been left in such a bad shape because of all the corruption that had taken place throughout the years not only by people living there at the time but even the political leaders that had taken advantage of Latin America by exploiting all its resources. Poor management, inflation and a huge amount of debt had been the result of what happened after the dirty war.

The 1985 earthquake also left Mexico in shambles. After doing my own research I realised the magnitude of this issue, and of the earthquake- it struck in the early morning of 19 September at with a magnitude of of 8.0. Not only did the event caused serious damage to the Greater Mexico area and the deaths of at least 5,000 people, it left the city completely crumbling.  Miguel de la Madrid, was the former president of Mexico whose scoffed management of the earthquake that shattered Mexico City in 1985. He was starting off his reign but did not do a very good job at reviving the city. The people had lost all hope in the government of Mexico.   De la Madrid took offers of assistance from the north and put his pride before necessity which is why a lot of Mexicans to date do not think he did a good job being a leader- because of the way he handled the situation and not acknowledged the earthquake by accepting foreign aid. 32 years later Mexico was hit with another earthquake- Pena Nieto was the present at the time, and again during his reign there was not much assistance and the government proved to be once again incapable of handling such situations.


My question for today: currently, would you agree/disagree that Mexico’s government is capable of handling such situations if natural disasters were ever to occur?

Week 10 Power to the people

This week we have been looking at “power to the people” and certain political leaders that transformed Latin America. Populism having been characterized as having charismatic leaders being able to easily speak to people because of their use of speech. This tactic I have noticed has been around for ages, I remember having studied Julius Caesar and exploring the ways in which he speaks to his people, and he had been able to get the vote of people because of the way he would speak- and this would be by coming down to their level instead of speaking as if he was superior to them. We can see this trait used by many leaders today in the world. Populist on the other hand I discovered contrasts greatly with the ideas expressed above. Speaking Truth to Power: Week 12

Today when we bring up the idea of Latin America, it is almost always associated to immigrates and drugs.   The drug war is not a stereotype of Latin America, but after watching the lecture videos I realised that it is in fact a part of life, it has happened, it happens even today, and may even continue to happen in future. The military, businesses and people are all trying to extract as much money as they can- and thus causing corruption. Coming from a highly corrupt country Kenya, I know that changing the foundation of this and trying to put an end to drug cartels is extremely difficult and will probably take a while for such measures to be implemented. The War on Drugs is my favourite video so far!   It showed us how drugs are brought into countries and the extent through which people will go through just to bring in these drug- like hiding it in coffee bags, or having people swallow and eat packets of cocaine.   Infamous people like Pablo Escobar had been depicted in the video

Week 11 the terror

This week’s lecture was based of Peru’s Civil War of 1980S. It discusses the failed land reform and the state’s abandonment. Almost 70,000 people had died during Peru’s Civil war all due to internal conflict between the Peruvian Army and guerrilla fighters. Most of the people that had died were just ordinary civilians. This war was actually considered one of the most ‘bloody’ Peruvian wars in history since their colonization by Europe and is considered the second longest war in Latin America- Colombia’s armed conflict war is the first. I found this week’s readings and lecture’s extremely thought-provoking. The first video I had looked at had been done by students explaining briefly what the war had been about: - the introduction of an Agrarian reform which was based on giving authority to the indigenous people.
